Congratulations to Philly Whitemarsh along with other local teams Wilmington, Lancaster Roses and Reading for making the Division 2 and Division 3 MARFU Final Four and advancing one round closer to the National Championship! It should be a great weekend for rugby, with the weather predicted to be sunny, but not too hot. Wilmington will take on the Washington Irish, Lancaster plays Rocky Gorge and our own Philly Whitemarsh plays Reading with the winners of these first round matches automatically advancing to the USA Rugby Round of 16 in the weeks ahead.
Philly Whitemarsh dominated their home opener against rival North Penn to the tune of a 72-3 win. Eleven different PW players combined for 12 tries in the contest, Brian Oteri was the lone PW to touch down twice. The PW pack had another strong performance, stealing several defensive scrums and not allowing the North Penn pack to get anything going offensively.
Philly Whitemarsh scored early and often on Saturday to the tune of 81-7 shellacking of North Penn to stay undefeated at 7-0. Eight players combined for 13 tries of PW including 4 from winger, Brennan Conway. Kurht Engle pitched in two from the other wing and Captain Bob Haller added two of his own.
Philadelphia Whitemarsh RFC (11-0) continued their magical undefeated season Sunday afternoon with a 37-32 victory over Virginia RFC (8-1) in the MARFU Division 3 Championship game. After a hard fought, back-and-forth game that saw a total of nine tries between the two sides, it was PW’s defense that staged a goal line stand in the final minute to clinch the victory.
USA Eagle Prop and longtime Philadephia Whitemarsh and Washington Rugby Club prop George "GJ" Sucher ran a training session the other evening for the forwards from PWRFC. Philadelphia Whitemarsh is headed to Virginia Beach this weekend to face New England RFU champions, Saratoga Stampede (NY) in the USA Rugby Round of 16. The Chicago Riot and Hilton Head Island are also participating. PW hopes to face the winner of the Riot v. Hilton Head match on Sunday. George seemed pleased with the session and the PWRFC caught up with George afterwards to get some additional insight.
Marcus Respes, Drexel's Head Rugby Coach and Philadelphia Whitemarsh Alumni and Chris Ryan combined instructional talents this evening to provide a great night of rugby training. The boys of PWRFC took a run with the some very talented student athletes from Drexel University.
