Pete (on the left in the above photo, with fellow hall of famers Tony Studdy and Ben Spillard) arrived on the local rugby scene way back in 1964 playing for Philadelphia Rugby Club. His friend, Tony Studdy, gave him a contact, Alan Simms. Peter played for Philadelphia one more year in '65.
Peter was asked to ref a game in the spring of 1966, enjoyed it and was immediately hooked.
The area had very few refs back in the mid-sixies, so he took up ref’ing full time in the fall of ’66. Pete became one of the forefathers of the area’s rugby union which lead him to becoming a founding member of the East Penn Rugby Referees Society.
Pete was the first “A Panel Referee” on the East Coast and was chosen to ref the Eastern Rugby Union’s narrow 12-6 loss to France in 1976.
Late in his rugby career, Peter enjoyed working behind the scenes for the Philly Whitemarsh Rugby Club. Pete and Tony Studdy made many a supper for the players at the club house after weeknight practice.
Peter enjoyed promoting casino nights, art auctions, Super Bowl ticket raffles and then came the Christmas tree sales. Since the Christmas tree fundraiser’s inception, Pete has participated as the designated driver on the yearly pilgrimage with George Betzler to pick up the trees in central Pennsylvania.
Peter, a long time member of Philadelphia Rugby Club, then Philadelphia Whitemarsh Rugby Football Club is a worthly member of the Hall of Fame class of 2015.
