Pelicans Triumph at Philadelphia Rugby 10’s

Rugby teams across the region got an early start on their fall season by participating in the Philadelphia Rugby 10’s tournament on August 9.  It was the first time this rugby variation had been played in Philadelphia and eight men and four women’s teams did their best to crack the code to success.

The Women’s Division saw Lady Pelicans recover from an opening round loss to Lancaster Thorns to meet them again in the Championship final.  Lady Pelicans extracted their revenge with a 36-0 performance to secure the First Place Trophy.

In the Men’s Division, a talented Lancaster Roses side won Pool A, while Team Pelican proved the best of Pool B.  The final was an exciting display of very attractive rugby with Team Pelican winning by a 24 – 0 margin.  It should be noted that Team Pelican avoided surrendering a single point during the entire tournament.

The Women’s Tournament Champion MVP was awarded to Nicole Benedetti of Lady Pelicans, with Ben Janssen of Team Pelican being the Men’s Tournament Champion MVP.

Rugby 10’s played in mid-August is a perfect transition between traditional Summer 7’s and the looming Fall League season.  Tournament host Northeast Irish has already secured larger facilities for next year’s event and the number of participating teams is expected to double.  For further information please contact Tournament Director Dan Patterson at
