Marcus Maffei: 2015 Hall of Fame Inductee
As the story goes (see the photo above) ... in the third place qualifying match at the end of the day, PW faced off against MOB (Maryland Old Boys) in the 1997 MARFU Championships held at the Polo Fields in Bryn Mawr. The winner would go on to the national tournament hosted by Philly Whitemarsh in Conshohocken.
Maryland had crushed us earlier in the day. From a set scrum the ball went through the hands and back to the fly (Siano) on a camel play. After I got the ball back from the OC (after watching the video I still can't tell who was playing OC), I decided to grub through, Marcus picked up a bouncing ball and scored. The Maryland defender (Verb), looking like he is going to catch Marcus in the photo ran out of room.
Marcus scored what turned out to be the winning try. It was PW's first of 5 trips in a row to the national championship. PW hosted all five. Additionally, PW won the national USA Rugby championship in 1999.
The story above typifies Marcus Maffei's contribution to PWRFC. On the sevens pitch and in fifteens with speed combined with the uncanny ability to make people miss, Marcus was a try scorer and a player who could break a match wide open on a single play.
Marcus joined PW right after the merger in 1985. The merger brought hated rivals Philadelphia Rugby Club and Whitemarsh Rugby Football Club together. Marcus was a huge part of that young talent and a truly deserving member of the Philadelphia Whitemarsh Hall of Fame.
