Boccuti Named New Rugby Coach at Malvern Prep
(Sept. 2, 2014) Matt Boccuti has been named the new head coach of Malvern Prep’s Rugby Team, Malvern Athletic Director Kurt Ruch announced today. Boccuti works as a science teacher at Malvern Prep and will be overseeing the long-term development of the sport and the recruitment of new students to the team.
“We were impressed with his knowledge of and experience in the sport,” said Ruch. “He has a great plan for in-house recruitment, as well as the expertise to develop the students into strong players and take the program to new heights.”
Boccuti played Division I rugby at Penn State University from 2006-2010. Since 2010 he has been playing for the Philadelphia-Whitemarsh Rugby Football Club as a wing forward. Boccuti has held multiple coaching positions in the sport, most recently as the Assistant JV Coach for the Pennsylvania All-State Rugby Team. Since 2012 Boccuti has been both the Assistant Coach for Varsity Rugby and JV Head Coach at Malvern Prep. Prior to that, he was the Assistant Coach at St. Joseph’s Preparatory School.
This past June Boccuti led the Malvern Prep 7s Rugby team to the championship game of the High School College Rugby Championships at PPL Park in Chester.
Boccuti is looking forward to his new role at Malvern Prep. “I am excited about the potential of the program - we’ve come a long way in the history of the program, and I am looking forward to building upon that and leaving my mark.”
Boccuti’s coaching philosophy is simple: keep the game fun and build a community. “It’s important to trust the guys you play with because the game can become compromised if you do not trust the guy to your left to make the appropriate tackle,” said Boccuti.
Boccuti hopes to build to team to become the best in Southeastern Pa., then move on to become the best in the state. His hopes for the season? To build a bigger and better team and expose more people in the Malvern community to the sport of rugby. “Being a teacher on campus is a plus because I already have a connection with some of the students. Now the focus is on educating them about the sport and encouraging them to try out.”
“Our long-term goal is to make Malvern Prep a destination for the top student-athletes in our area,” said Ruch. “We want our rugby players to attend top colleges. Matt will continue to keep the program at a high level and build upon recruitment of current students to be involved in the sport.”
Boccuti is replacing Jack Foley, who has taken a new position at Villanova University. “We would like to thank Jack for his many years of service to Malvern and wish him the best of luck at Villanova” said Ruch.
