Philly-Whitemarsh battled their way to a big win Saturday in a hard-fought game vs. Lancaster Roses at Monsignor Bonner High School. The 44-0 victory is a great start to the season after having to deal with 4 canceled/postponed matches to date due to poor weather and field conditions.
The first half was close in the beginning with tough battles around the ruck and some missed opportunities by PWRFC. The defense allowed little room for the Roses to operate, allowing for a tremendous amount of possession for the home side. Great individual efforts by flanker Tim Foley and Captain Bob Haller allowed for PWRFC to get on the board first and cruise into a halftime lead of 15-0.
As second half play opened, so did the efforts of the Philly-Whitemarsh backline. John "Spanky" Grace led the backs around the field, finding lanes and holes for everyone to run through...namely winger Kurht Engle, who was relishing his return to the starting XV with multiple line breaks and a score. All in all it was a great day of rugby with PW defeating the Lancaster Roses 44-0 in their first match of the Spring.
The B-Side match was just as exciting with scores left and right. Unrelenting, the Philly-Whitemarsh second side was piecing together play as cohesively as the first XV. After some great offloads, terrific defense, and passing were displayed the boys brought home the second victory of the day for the home side.
The PW vs Lancaster game originally scheduled for March 21 at Memorial Hall was postponed due to snow. The game now takes place March 28 at Monsignor Bonner H.S. in Drexel Hill.
Last fall PW won their first D2 match 19-12 over the Lancaster Roses. We're looking for a repeat on the turf field at Bonner.
The address is 403 N. Lansdowne Avenue, Drexel Hill, PA.
An aftermatch is scheduled about 20 minutes away from the field at Barnaby's in Aston, PA.
